Man arrested after driving through Oshkosh airport gates and onto runway

Local News

A man has been taken into custody following a high-speed chase that ended at Wittman Airport in Oshkosh.

Officials say that a trooper tried stopping a driver for a traffic violation on Interstate 41 south of State Highway 44 at 1:41 p.m. Tuesday.  The driver of the 2001 Toyota Celica then led troopers on a chase.

The suspect exited at STH 44, then turned onto Knapp Street in Oshkosh toward the airport.

The driver led troopers to Wittman Airport where he drove through closed airport gates. He proceeded onto the airport property, crossed a runway and his vehicle then became stuck in the field.

Troopers were able to apprehend 56-year-old Lee Konop from Manitowoc.

Airport personnel were notified of the incident to divert any aircraft that may be affected.

The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
