Man dead in Marinette Co. officer-involved shooting

PESHTIGO, Wis. (WFRV) - UPDATE: All four officers involved in an officer-involved shooting in the early morning hours of December 7 have been identified.

According to the Marinette County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Sheriff David Oginski, Deputy Sheriff Spencer Elias, as well as Officer Greg Haemker and Officer Derrik Maye all fired their weapons during the incident.

All four officers have completed their interviews with Department of Justice officials.

They remain on paid administrative leave as the investigation continues.


Marinette County Sheriff's officials have identified the man killed early Thursday morning in a police-involved shooting.

35-year-old Jesse Cole Shuping of Portsmouth, Virginia was positively identified as the deceased person.

Police say he is a convicted felon in the State of Virginia and North Carolina. He was on Probation and Parole at the time of his death, as well as wanted on a Grand Larceny Charge by authorities in Virginia.

According to investigators, the incident at the motel that lead to the shooting appears to be an attempt by Shuping to collect a debt he believed he was owed by someone staying at the Budget Inn on the 1300 block of Marinette Avenue.

Authorities say he had been living in the Marinette area for the past month to six weeks, spending time at a local shelter and befriending a local who allowed him to stay at her residence.

The names of the officers involved are being withheld until they can be formally interviewed by the Wisconsin Department of Justice, which is scheduled to happen next week.


Four Marinette Police Officers are on leave after a shooting that left one person dead Thursday morning. 

It all started at a Motel in Marinette when staff received a report of a man with a gun. 

Officials were able to locate the suspect on highway 64 west of Marinette. 

The man led officials on a chase where he later went into the ditch, and emerged with a handgun. 

Officials say that's when gunshots were exchanged and the suspect was shot and killed. 

The Officers involved in the shooting were not injured. 

The investigation is on-going and Officials say it will take some time to figure out all of the details.

The Marinette County Sheriff's Office says that at 12:10 AM on Thursday they received a report of a man armed with a handgun at a motel in the city of Marinette.

Investigators are not yet sure whether it was a robbery attempt or a domestic incident.

Through further investigation, authorities were able to track the believed suspect to be at or near State Highway 64 in the town of Peshtigo.

When officers arrived, they saw the suspect enter a car and leave westbound on Highway 64.

Officers then attempted to stop the car at Schacht Road, causing it go to into the ditch.

That's when police say the suspect exited the car armed with a gun and placed the officers in danger.

The man was subsequently shot and killed by officers and pronounced dead at the scene.

Neither the two City of Marinette Police Officers nor the two Marinette County Sheriff's Deputies involved were injured.

Authorities say that the public is no longer in danger.

State Highway 64 will be closed and detoured from County "R W" on the west and at the Marinette City limits on the east for several hours.

Wisconsin's Department of Justice is conducting the investigation.

The names of those involved is being withheld, but will be released when appropriate.
