Mental health will be the topic of discussion Tuesday morning as leaders in Brown County look for ways to reduce the number of inmates returning to jail.

Brown County has a more than $1-million mental health initiative that includes a Day Report Center.

At the county board meeting on Tuesday members are expected to discuss how to move forward. Currently, 50 of about 700 inmates in the Brown County Jail would be eligible to receive treatment at the Day Report Center.

Leaders in the county say it would be a way to reduce tax-dollars used to house people in jail, while also helping to reduce a relapse in crime.

Many, also say often these people have needs that “can be best addressed not with incarceration but within treatment and strict supervision.”

Brown County leaders say they expect the plan to pass.

The meeting to take up the initiative begins at 9:30 AM.
