FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WFRV) – Authorities in Fond du Lac County have released additional information regarding the structure fire on East 2nd Street.
According to a release, the City of Fond du Lac Police Department was sent to the 400 block of East 2nd Street for a domestic violence investigation at around 1:00 p.m. on Friday.
Upon arrival, officers quickly learned a 29-year-old victim was able to make their way to safety at a neighboring home. Officers then learned that a 31-year-old suspect had barricaded themself inside the residence with a can of gasoline.
Officials quickly evacuated the upstairs tenants and requested firefighters to the scene for any potential fires.
Fond du Lac Police established a perimeter and attempted to negotiate with the suspect to peacefully exit the house. However, they were uncooperative and hung up the phone multiple times.
During the negotiations, flames could be seen coming from the first floor of the residence, and smoke began showing from the windows. Authorities say the suspect briefly exited the residence, refused to cooperate, and then re-entered the nearly fully engulfed house.
Within moments, the suspect then exited through a side door and was taken into custody. Fond du Lac fire crews encountered heavy fire conditions showing from the front and side of the two-story, multi-family residence.
The fire was quickly extinguished, but not before it caused extensive damage.
The 31-year-old suspect was transported to a nearby hospital with significant injuries. In addition, a police officer was also sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
The suspect is facing multiple charges and will be transported to the Fond du Lac County Jail after they’re medically cleared.
The investigation into the domestic violence and cause of the fire is at the preliminary stages and remains under active investigation by FDLPD and FDLFR.
No further information is being released at this time.
