Wednesday is National Bike to School Day, and in Northeast Wisconsin, the rain is slowing down, but not stopping, the event. Schools can participate in Bike to School Day in a variety of ways. The annual event is meant to promote the benefits of biking and bicycle safety.
At Fort Howard Elementary School in Green Bay, kids normally spend the day biking to school in groups before meeting at the school and taking a lap together around the building. But with rain hitting the Green Bay area on Wednesday, there was much less participation this year than the usual 40-50 kids.
“I think the turnout is today probably about maybe 8 kids, maybe 10,” said school counselor Tammy Van Ess.
It’s the first time the school has received bad weather on Bike to School Day, but they’re not letting it rain on their parade.
“A little rain isn’t gonna let us down as long as it’s not slippery for the kids,” said Van Ess. “We’ll just continue to roll with it.”
