New Recreation Center Close to Opening

Local News

After decades at the old civic center, sports teams in Marinette will soon have a new place to call home.

The civic center currently houses the ice rink in Marinette, but now a new multi-million dollar building will play home to hockey and many other sports.

“Probably about 20 years ago the city recognized a need for a new recreational center and there has been discussions about where that location might be and I think through the years the struggle has been with funding.” – Gavin Scray

And after $6 million was raided privately and another $10 million bonded through the county it was time for construction to begin.

“In addition to the ice arena we have a turf center and then we have an activity hall. The activity hall itself is quite a diverse space. We have the opportunity to house not only basketball, tennis, pickle ball, but also conferences, shows, conventions, things like that.”

The new recreation center is not open yet, but the public will be able to see the new complex in just a few weeks.

“We have our grand opening scheduled for January 25th. On that date we’re going to open our doors to the general public at 4:00 PM. We will have self guided tours and offer people a chance for people to wander through the building. We will have a lot of staff and volunteers on hand to answer any questions people may have.”

And while the civic center was home for many years, the new recreation center will be able to house more activities for groups across the region.

“There was a need to replace those facilities, but also with the addition of the convention space, trade show area, and the turf center, not only is that something the local community can benefit from, but also I think regionally as far up as Escanaba and as far south as Green Bay. We have a lot to offer when it comes to that sort of thing.”

A high school hockey tournament will take place during opening weekend of the facility.
