A new Kewaunee County water quality report identifies new sources for tainted well water. Linda Cocahardt lives in the Township of Lincoln and has contaminated water in her well.
Cocahardt’s replaced their well only to find that it tested positive for bacteria six months later.
Results from the water quality studio study found that 131 wells tested, 41 test positive bovine manure and 29 wells had evidence of human waste. Kauwaunee County has one of highest contamination in the state.
Dairy farmers like John Pagel are taking the problem head on and stressing the importance of education. ” We are coming up with new techniques that are going to improve water quality and we are working on five programs this year,”Pagel’s Ponderosa Founder, John Pagel said. There are other options to combating brown water such as a reverse osmosis system and experimental device are being piloted in Kewaunee County. The hope is make Kewaunee County a model for other areas in Wisconsin dealing with similar problems.
