Nine-year-old Donates Birthday to Ashwaubenon Public Safety's K-9 Unit

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (WFRV) - When Mariah Weiss turned nine in April, she didn't ask for gifts from the friends and family that attended her birthday party.

Instead, she asked for donations for Ashwaubenon Public Safety's K-9 Unit.

"Today's donation from Mariah is a really big for us," Captain Jody Crocker of Ashwaubenon Public Safety told Local 5. "We started this program a little bit over four years ago, and it's basically been off of donations from the community."

For Mariah's mother, the donation was just as meaningful.

"I'm really proud of her," Jaclyn Weiss said. "She just, she challenges me every day to just look at the world differently, and really just appreciate it, and what you can do not matter how old you are."

This is not the first time Mariah has donated her birthday, but the $600 check she presented to Ashwaubenon Public Safety on Wednesday is her biggest donation yet.

Captain Crocker said he's impressed with Mariah's giving spirit - especially since she has already decided she wants to be an Ashwaubenon Public Safety Officer when she grows up.

"She's already raising money to help us help people," he said. "That really says a lot about her character and for the character of her family to bring her up that way."

As for that family, they're amazed at their little philanthropist.

"Most nine-year-olds don't have 'What can we do to help our community?' on their minds," Jaclyn said, "so it's really humbling as a parent."
