CALUMET COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) - The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ conservation wardens and the Calumet County Sheriff’s Office are jointly investigating a fatal snowmobile accident that occurred on Lake Winnebago on Saturday, February 9.
The crash occurred on the frozen-over Lake Winnebago about 4:30 p.m. around Stockbridge in Calumet County. It involved a single snowmobile with a lone operator. The crash left the operator deceased.
The Calumet County Sheriff’s Office and Calumet County Coroner are handling the official identification and notification of survivors. Once their process is completed, the identification of the deceased will be released by the county.
Details are few as the crash remains an ongoing investigation. It appears the operator of the snowmobile struck a snowbank or a crack on the ice, and the machine landed atop the one individual.
Alcohol and speed are possible factors.
