Steven Pirus is in custody for allegedly shooting his wife and attempting to cover the crime by causing an explosion of the home, according to police.
Pirus is being charged with first degree intentional homicide, arson and reckless endangerment, according to police.
A woman whose body was found in the explosion wreckage on Stratton Way was the victim of “homicidal firearm trauma,” the Dane County Medical Examiner said in a news release Sunday.
The medical examiner identified the woman as 50-year-old Lee Anne Pirus of Madison.
A news release says Pirus died as the result of a shooting and “not injuries sustained in the explosion and subsequent fire.”
The medical examiner’s office says additional testing and examination is still underway.
WISC, our partners in Madison, originally reported that public records show the home was owned by Steven and Lee Anne Pirus since 2005. As of Sunday afternoon, Steven Pirus was in custody in the Dane County jail.
A news conference with both fire and police officials is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
The death is currently under investigation by the Madison Police Department, Madison Fire Department, Wisconsin Department of Justice Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, in addition to the medical examiner.
Fire officials have said they have not yet determined the cause of the explosion, which rattled the west side neighborhood Wednesday.
