Pulaski High School Greenhouse Roof Collapses in Blizzard

Local News

Nearly a week after our blizzard, victims of that huge storm are still totaling their losses. Local 5’s Kris Schuller traveled to Pulaski where the roof of the high school’s greenhouse collapsed under heavy snow.

Outside Pulaski High School a greenhouse soon to be torn down – after its roof buckled under two feet of snow.

“The alarms we have in the greenhouse let us know something had happened,” said Principal Jeremy Pach. “They sent us over right away Sunday morning during the middle of the storm.”

Destroying four months of work for FFA students who were growing plants for the groups many fundraisers.

“The greenhouse is probably totaled and all our plants, all the hard work students have put in here this season and seasons past, is gone,” said Kaleb Santy, a teacher at the high school.

Santy says it’s a huge blow for over 800 students who use the greenhouse to grow plants and as a classroom and lab for a number of different agriculture education curriculum.

“I was devastated, I heard about it Sunday afternoon. It’s almost like my second home because I’m there so often,” said student Zoe Clough.

Right now, FFA students should be placing plants in hanging baskets and nurturing vegetable plants for spring fundraisers. But all that stock was likely lost.

“We lost about four grand in sales with this collapsing,” said student Kaylin Naparalla.

But Santy says discussions are underway to build a new greenhouse by next school year –  one that could always weather Wisconsin’s winters. Even those as historic –  as last weekend’s blizzard.

“Our plan is to have a plan by next Friday,” said Santy.

The FFA chapter in Pulaski is one of the largest in Wisconsin.
