The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has made improvements to State Highway 45, State Highway 54 after a crash that left a woman dead.

On September 28, 2017, Shirley Duwe of Marion was hit by another driver who was traveling the wrong way on the highway. That driver mistook the road for a four-lane highway. Duwe later died from her injuries.

A friend of Duwe’s began to do what she could to make sure this kind of accident never happened again. She attended traffic safety meetings and spoke with traffic engineers as well as law enforcement to fight for improvements along the highway.

The DOT heard what Duwe’s friend had to say, and as a result, signage has been improved in the area and rumble strips have been added to the centerline of the overpass.

Duwe’s friend wishes to remain anonymous, saying it wasn’t about her. It was about making a portion of the roadway safer. She also wants to encourage others to stand up for concerns they may have in their community and work to make things better.
