A teenage boy was shot and killed in Sauk County Tuesday morning while playing with his brother, according to a news release.
The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded at 10:34 a.m. to a report of a person who was shot at a home on Highway 23 south of Loganville.
According to the report, three juveniles, ages 10, 12 and 14, were playing a game of “Cops and Robbers” with rifles that they believed were not loaded.
At one point, the 10-year-old boy pointed a rifle at his 14-year-old brother and pulled the trigger, the sheriff’s office said.
The firearm had the magazine removed, but the boy didn’t know a round was in the chamber. The firearm discharged and struck the 14-year-old in the chest.
Officials said resuscitation efforts were started immediately but weren’t successful. The 14-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene by the Sauk County Coroner’s Office.
This incident remains under investigation by the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office.
