The Door County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents of a new scam targeting church parishioners. It involves a scammer posing as a clergy person and requesting gift cards via email.

The suspect poses as a priest or pastor and sends an email to the parishioners requesting ITunes gift cards for someone battling cancer, according to the Door County Sheriff’s Department.

In their most recent case, no money was exchanged. A savvy parishioner contacted the priest/pastor and notified them of the scam, deputies said in a Facebook post.

The Door County Sheriff’s Department is advising people to verify any request for money they receive by text or email, no matter how authentic it may appear. Be especially wary of requests for pre-paid debit cards or gift cards.

It is nearly impossible to trace these or stop the transaction once the suspect has been given the card’s verification number.
