SUV falls through ice on Lake Butte des Morts, police warn to use caution

Local News

A warning from the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday after an SUV in Oshkosh found itself in a precarious position.

The Sheriff’s Office shared photos of the incident in a Facebook post Tuesday, and took the opportunity to remind the public that no ice is 100% safe.

It happened on Lake Butte des Morts Tuesday, and the Sheriff’s Office says that no one was injured.

The post goes on to say, “Early ice is unsafe and unforgiving. We know there are many of you out there…and we know most of you out there will be just fine. Ice thickness is varying right now, and it can be deceiving with the fresh snow.”

The Sheriff’s Office warns to use extreme caution if you are heading out onto the ice this winter.
