Taking a look back at Packers medical equipment of the past

Local News

The game of football has changed over the years, so it’s no surprise that players’ equipment and medical treatment have adapted with the times.

On Monday, current Green Bay Packers team physician Dr. Patrick McKenzie of Bellin Health met with 89-year-old Richard Jubert, who treated Packers during the Vince Lombardi era. Jubert and his family recently donated some of his equipment to the Packers Hall of Fame, including a custom rib guard made for Bart Starr and a harness designed to prevent Ken Bowman from dislocating his shoulder.

According to Dr. McKenzie, the 20th-century rib guard will likely never make another appearance on the football field. “They’d make a mold of the guy’s chest,” McKenzie said. “It was unbelievable. That would not happen today.”

The donated items ultimately will be displayed at Bellin Health Titletown Sports Medicine & Orthopedics.
