FOND DU LAC, Wis. - When a kid is wrapping up at high school, he does not always know life has in store.
And it can create some surprising results.
"Never thought I'd be sitting through one of these," said Bret Scannell (19), an Army mechanic.
And the Army would change everything.
"High school I had no plans, really," he said. "Then I had the opportunity and said, 'That looks like fun. Let's try it.'"
Since then, he has become quite the family influence.
"Soon as I got in, give it a year, there's Ashlynn," he said. "Another few months, there's Brianna."
Seeing Bret make something of himself was enough of a sales pitch.
"He was really immature and did not know what he was doing the rest of his life," said Ashlynn Scannell (17), who will be working Human Resources for the Army. "And then he joined the Army, and then he's like, 'You know what? I know what I'm doing with my life.'"
There was one more where that came from.
"I don't think she's ever talked about it before until she saw me," she said. "She was like, 'Well, Ashlynn did it.' And when I did it, I was like, 'Well, Bret did it.'"
It will give them all one more thing to talk about when they are older.
"With all three of us, it's kind of an extra little thing we all have in common," said Brianna Scannell (21), the latest from her family to join and will become a practical nursing specialist. "Something that we can all bond over. Even though we're all pretty close already."
But how does mom feel about all of this?
"Mom will give you the answer of 'Ah...' General start to her answer every time," said Bret.
"Ah... Yeah, that's a thing," said Audra Scannell, their mother.
As long as Bret thought about life after the Army, she would end up being cool with it.
"I just made him promise me that when he enlisted, he was going to take a job that would give him a skill," she said.
And all three of them are doing just that.
Army recruiters in Fond du Lac could not remember the last time three siblings enlisted, calling it "unheard of".
