Titletown Cheese opening dairy plant in Denmark

DENMARK, Wis. (WFRV) - A shuttered dairy plant in Denmark will soon see new life.  As Local 5's Kris Schuller reports a De Pere based cheese packaging company is moving in and in the process, creating new jobs.

For four years this former Land O' Lakes dairy plant in Denmark has sat vacant.  Now Jerry Haines, the president of Titletown Cheese, is its new owner with big plans to expand his operations.

“We actually buy and sell cheese.  We buy cheese from manufacturers all across the U.S., but mainly in Wisconsin and we redistribute it throughout the country,” said Haines.

Haines says renovations will get underway here to create a second facility for the packaging and distribution of millions of pounds of cheese, with an eye of expanding into global markets.

“To get the Wisconsin brand out there, get it out throughout the world and try to expand into markets that have never been touched before, to get cheese out of this country,” said Haines.

For the last 10 years Titletown Cheese has been working out of a packaging facility in Monroe.  But with a long- term goal to expand by focusing on specialty and artisan cheeses, Haines knew he would need more room and decided his future was in Denmark.

“Denmark has been great working with, such a nice community and I've kind have had my eyes set on it for a few years,” said Haines.

Initially Haines expects to hire 25-40 employees in this first phase of a 5-year expansion plan. Village officials are thrilled because when Land O’ Lakes closed roughly 90 people lost jobs.

“We've got an existing facility that's going to be revitalized and it's going to provide some needed jobs that will bring people to our community and keep people in our community,” said Village of Denmark board member, Susan Selner.

“I'm excited -  but like any businessman you have to be a little nervous too. But I think we're headed in the right direction,” said Haines.

The plant is expected to open in the months ahead.
