U.S. Mint Adds Quarter Showcasing the Apostle Islands

Local News

Something new and shiny will be coming out soon and it is honoring a Wisconsin hidden treasure.

The U.S. Mint released the 42nd coin in the America the Beautiful Program  today and it honors the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

Tribal leaders, citizens, park officials and U.S. Mint leaders gathered in Red Cliff, Wisconsin to talk with the designer of the quarter and commemorate the release of the coin into circulation.

The designer, Richard Masters says he was hoping to capture the nature on the Apostle Islands and that when people look at it, they get a sense of curiosity about the area.

Red Cliff Band Elder had this to say about the coin:

“When you get a coin, you look at it, and you kind of mention to somebody, ‘ I wonder what’s the story with this?’ And I think that will draw people, give them interest and draw people to come to understand, and maybe learn about what this area is, what the Apostle Islands are, who the tribes are, and what’s the history.”

U.S. Mint will be making 300 million quarters that will be added into circulation over the next couple months.
