Season 1 of Making a Murderer was a 10-hour documentary looking at the story of Steven Avery who was convicted of rape and later exonerated, then charged with murdering Halbach.
The story that caught the eye of two film students – looking for a chance to examine the criminal justice system.
“His story really seemed unprecedented to us and really seemed to present the opportune window through which to look at the criminal justice system,” said Laura Ricciardi, one of the documentary’s directors.
Ricciardi and Moira Demos devoted nearly a decade to the project – shooting hundreds of hours of footage and spending weeks with the Avery family, all to document the case as it moved through the courts.
