3/27/2019 11:38 a.m.

The Weyauwega Fire Department says negligent use of a lighter is to blame for a fire at Weyauwega-Fremont High School Monday night.

In a press release, officials say the department was on scene from just before 5 p.m. until 8:36 in order to put out the fire and fully ventilate the building.

Though the fire was contained to a middle school restroom, students and staff inside and outside the Weyauwega campus were all evacuated and moved away from the building.

Officials say fire damage to the building was contained to the restroom, however, there was extensive smoke damage throughout the middle school building.

Damages are still being investigated, but early estimates indicate they could exceed $75,000.

There were no injuries reported with the fire operations or with the evacuation.
