Road Closures Remain in Place After Fire at Author’s Kitchen + Bar

3/13/2019 4:07 p.m.

Appleton Police say they’ve set up temporary road closures on Washington Street between Appleton Street and Oneida Street.

They say the roof of the building housing Author’s Kitchen + Bar and multiple apartments collapsed, raising concerns about the walls of building falling down. The road closures were put up as a precaution.

Only westbound traffic on the closed stretch of Washington will be permitted. Vehicles will be able to turn south onto Appleton Street, but police urge drivers to use caution because of crews demolishing the Blue Ramp.

Police say the restrictions will remain in place until the walls are either stabilized or torn down.

Meanwhile, Author’s Kitchen + Bar thanked their customers for their support after the fire. They wrote, “All the material things can be replaced but you cannot replace the character, vibe, ambience, and joy that we had worked so hard to create for our guests.”

The Appleton Fire Department is on the scene of an apartment fire that broke out around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday at 201 North Appleton Street, next to the Appleton Public Library and behind Chase Bank and Copper Rock Coffee House.

Battalion Chief Jeff Felauer says the apartments sit above three or four businesses, but he couldn’t specify which ones.

There’s no word on injuries at this time but the building has been evacuated. As of 4:00 a.m., crews were still trying to put out the flames.

Local 5 has a crew on the way to the scene. Stay with Local 5 This Morning for continued updates.
