UPDATE: Victim in Sturgeon Bay Crash Identified

The man who died in Wednesday’s morning crash has been identified as 66-year-old Steven Schmelzer of Sturgeon Bay. Schmelzer was reportedly conducting a land survey when he was hit by a vehicle driven by 71-year-old Dennis Connolly of Sturgeon Bay. The Door County Sheriff’s Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol are continuing to investigate.


A 66-year-old man from Sturgeon Bay is dead after being hit by a car while working on a road.

Deputies say at around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, a 71-year-old Sturgeon Bay man was driving north on Mathey Road when he struck the victim. The man who was working on the road was pronounced dead the scene.

The Door County Sheriff’s Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol are investigating the incident. Names have not been released pending notification of the victim’s family.
