Wisconsin Public Service is warning about a recent phone scam in which the caller demands money or else their power will be shut off.
The scammer is said to ask for a prepaid credit card, specifically a Green Dot card, to be purchased by the victim to pay for past due bills. The caller claims that the person is behind on a utility bill payment and are subject to immediate disconnection.
WPS says that the scammer also uses technology to make it look as if the call is coming from a local number or even the utility company.
WPS does not take prepaid credit cards as payment and will never meet customers to make payments.
