APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – Homemade baby food is really popular right now. But, not everybody has the time or culinary skills to go the DIY route.
A local mom is on a mission to bring flavor to the table with ease. “It is about time that we up the ante and give our babies the best nutrition that we can” says Amanda Santoro. She is putting her 20 years as a registered nurse and experience as a mom to work in the kitchen.
“I am a mother of four children and always made my own baby food at home for the first three. With my last child I was trying to simplify my life and looking for an alternate resource for homemade baby food. I couldn’t find any fresh local baby food options” she explains.
So, Santoro started the little food company. “We make fresh locally sourced organic baby food. That is preservative free, gluten free, vegan”.
She is currently the only one in the state with a business like this. Orders are coming in from across the Midwest. “I do offer shipping for a five dollar flat rate anywhere in the state of Wisconsin and the neighboring states too” Santoro explains.
Each batch is prepared at The Green Tomato, a shared commercial kitchen in Appleton. “I do seasonal products and year round products. During the summer some of my most popular were my watermelon, carrot and cauliflower berries”.
You will not find any raw ingredients in the recipes. “The bananas I roast, the avocados are roasted. The berries, even the watermelon I roast. What it does is enriches the flavors, breaks down some of the enzymes so it is easier on babies tummy” Santoro says.
The purees are packed in a vacuum sealed bag and last for about six months in the freezer.
According to Santoro “I think baby food has gotten a bad rap over the years because it is tasteless, bland and nutrient deprived. When you make it this way it is wholesome, flavorful and you can actually use it in other foods that you are cooking like if you wanted to put it in pancake batter or your oatmeal in the morning”.
It is homemade baby food, without the fuss. The Little Food Company is taking one job off the plate of busy families.
