NEENAH, Wis. (WFRV) – Two new laws in Wisconsin are paving the way for a unique business in Neenah. It is the first moonshine sampling shop in the state.

It used to be, to get a bottle of moonshine you had to “know a guy”.

“First off I think most people, like 80%, think it is illegal and so they think they are doing something wrong, which is always fun in Wisconsin” says The Shinery’s owner Troy Reissmann.

Now, you can pick up a legal jug or jar at The Shinery downtown Neenah.

“We have watermelon, vanilla, cherry peach” explains Lisa Reissmann who owns the shop with her husband, and other investors.

A store like this was not possible until Governor Scott Walker signed a law in April that allows liquor sampling. He also approved a measure to fill growlers at grocery and liquor stores. The Shinery will do both. “You will be able to purchase a growler here and have it filled up with a beer of the week” Troy explains.

The moonshine comes in 25 different flavors. It is a taste direct from the hills of Tennessee.

“They sometimes drink it straight, but really anything you can mix another kind of alcohol with. For sampling we mix it with lemonade, ice tea or root beer” Lisa says.

So is it legal? Yes says Troy. “The real difference between the legal and illegal moonshine is one, its not as strong, and secondly we pay our taxes”.

But, this moonshine still packs a punch. Crafted the old fashioned way in copper stills, the corn whiskey is anywhere from 25 proof to 105 proof.

“You shake your bottle of moonshine. If the bubbles disappear right away, that is a stronger bottle of moonshine. They stay around for awhile you’ve got kind of a sissy moonshine” Troy explains.

While moonshine goes great in your glass, you can also pick up candy and even pickles made with the liquor.

“I think it is going to be very well received. We have had a lot of good feedback already. People are ready for something like this. They are ready for a change” Lisa says.

A place to get your shine on and toast the legalization of an american classic.

Find The Shinery at 303 N. Commercial Street in Neenah. The Grand Opening is Saturday, June 13.

The couple is already expecting a visit from moonshine royalty.

Tim Smith from the show Moonshiners will sign bottles on June 27th.
