A Duck’s Nest Becomes a Summer Learning Experience

Positively Wisconsin

Kids at Big Apple Day Care in Howard are getting a hands on learning experience by watching a duck’s nest. A mother duck built her nest next to the building and everyone is waiting for the day her 11 eggs hatch.

Educators at the day care are teaching the kids how to observe this small piece of Wisconsin nature. “We definitely use it as a learning opportunity. We use anything we can and the duck was perfect;” Lead Teacher Roxie Conroy explained. “They see the mama duck come out when we’re playing outside, and we talk to them about what she’s doing and that she’s hatching, you know laying the eggs, and that the eggs are going to hatch.”

The kids are told to look, but keep their distance. “You should leave them alone and don’t touch them;” one of the young students told us. “Just look at them and then go away. You should just look at them for one minute, then go away.”

The eggs are expected to hatch within the next couple of weeks.
