Special Report: Lambeauville

In the shadows of Lambeau Field, the Road Star Inn now sits vacant, purchased by the Packers organization as another piece to a decade-long puzzle.

“They have a plan,” says General Manager Andrew Schroepfer. “And we’re not in it.”

Schroepfer has watched over the years as nearby properties get bought up, knowing his could be next. That became reality in January, when ownership sold the property for $1.3M.

“We knew it was going to happen. Everybody knew it was going to happen.”

A Brown County Property Records Search shows the Packers now own a total 62 properties to the West, East, and South of Lambeau. They’ve been purchased under at least 5 different names – and are valued at nearly $49M.

The biggest property is now home to Cabela’s near the 41 interchange. That property is the only one the Packers have developed, although demolotion work has taken place on a handful of properties to date. In some cases, the Packers have paid more than twice the assessed value to acquire land. The organization is currently paying nearly a million dollars per year in property taxes – something village administrators say is good for the area.

“Well it’s certainly going to replace it with increment of greater value, which gives us a higher tax bases, which of course, creates more taxes,” says Village President Michael Aubinger. “But there also comes with it some costs too.”

Costs that include an impact on small businesses, as they disappear from the area one by one. :10:34

“It’s painful to see the customers go, the building,” says Schroepfer. “Ultimately, you want to see the Packers do well. But you don’t want to hurt everybody else.”

The Packers released the following statement to Local 5 saying

“The Packers continue to explore development options for land owned to the west of Lambeau Field but have no specific plans to announce at this time.”

So what are the Packers plans for developing the property? We’ll have more in part 2 of Lambeauville, Tuesday night at 10.
