Manitowoc (WFRV) Dillon Mayer Is autistic and has fragile x syndrome— which makes it difficult for him to communicate and interact with others– a year ago he couldn’t read or write.
Today Dillon has his own blog and Facebook page, and with the help of his mom is making friends around the country online.
Once a week– Dillon Mayor and his mom Jackie use an iPad to record an episode of his cooking show.
“He’s just so much fun in the kitchen. He’s fun and he brings so much joy,” said Jackie Mayer, Dillon’s mom.
Last fall Dillon and Jackie began posting his cooking shows and his personal stories on his blog– Dillon’s World.
“He put the iPad in front of us and wanted to watch himself cook and then got really silly and fun and I sort of pressed record and that was our cooking show,” explained Jackie.
Jackie started the blog and a Facebook page about a year ago when she started home schooling Dillon.
“Right now we are building up a community for Dillon in his life,” said Jackie.
The blog and page help Dillon with his motor and thinking skills.
“It helps tremendously we work on math we work on measuring, and counting,” said Jackie.
And it’s opened up Dillon’s world, reaching out to people in ways he was never able to before.
“He’s reading that’s amazing. He’s having full conversations with people,”
Dillon and Jackie regularly write out his thoughts on a piece of paper then Dillon will type it into his iPad and post it.
“The purpose behind that is I wanted him to be aware that there are people out there and that he can connect with others through social media,” said Jackie.
Dillon has more than 500 followers and Jackie reads all the comments to him.
“From all over the U.S. Sharing that they love to see him smile and they love the recipes,” Jackie said proudly.
And if you’re wondering if Dillon’s a good cook– ask his brothers, Peyton and Colin.
“Very good,” his brothers agreed.
Jackies dream is to open a Dillon’s world– brick and mortar building to someday have a place for Dillon, his followers and other autistic kids to visit.
