St. Norbert College student-run troupe Knight Theatre will present “The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the Musical” in six performances next week in Webb Theatre of Abbot Pennings Hall of Fine Arts on campus. Info: snc.edu/tickets/.

This scenario involves assorted facets.

+ First, the basics:

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 24, 25 and Jan. 26, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Jan. 27 and 2 p.m. Jan. 28.

+ Secondly, the background:

“The Hunchback of Notre Dame” is a classic novel by French writer Victor Hugo. The novel was published in 1831, and its story is set in Paris in 1482. Among numerous versions of the story is the 1996 Disney animated feature film upon which this stage production is based. The score was nominated for an Academy Award. The stage version includes new songs. Peter Parnell’s new book embraces story theater and features verbatim passages from the novel.

The musical premiered in 1999 in Berlin, Germany. The English language version premiered in 2014 in San Diego, Calif.

+ Next, the story:

Romance involves gypsy girl Esmeralda; Quasimodo, the bell ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral; and other hopefuls in the life of Esmeralda.

+ Next, the concept of Knight Theatre:

While St. Norbert College has performance programs, Knight Theatre is a for-fun activity, though on a large scale. Faculty participation is limited. Students do a vast majority of work involved in the production. Even though students graduate and move on, the idea of Knight Theatre has perpetuated. One thought I have is a great sense of accomplishment must factor into the longevity of Knight Theatre.

+ Next, a note:

This is a full production in set, costuming and live music. Approximately 70 students are involved.
