Police Officers, School Officials Help Green Bay Second Grader Celebrate NYFO Scholarship

Eight-year-old Gabe Laverdiere gasped Thursday afternoon as National Youth Football Organization Green Bay Commissioner Steven Childers announced the second-grader had won a scholarship to participate in the upcoming Spring 7on7 League.

“I knew I wanted to get this,” Gabe told Local 5.

The announcement came as a surprise, made in front of Gabe’s second-grade class.

“His mom had contacted us a couple months ago about some scholarships and obviously he qualified and with things that he’s been through, healthwise and everything, we decided that we should go a little above and beyond what we do normally,” Childers said.

“Above and beyond” included a visit from several Green Bay Police Officers, who Rochelle Denil Laverdiere says her son looks up to.

“The police have always been kind of our biggest support,” she said. “They care. They really do care. They come out for this little boy who admires them so much.”

Gabe was also gifted football equipment, including cleats and a jersey.

“We wanted to make sure it was a special day for Gabe,” Childers said.
