A birthday party in Oshkosh Friday celebrated the life of a woman who has made it to an age not many people will live to see.
Sister Mary Urban was born on March 2nd, 1913. That’s 105 years ago, and 82 of those years have been spent in the church.
The Lourdes Academy marching band and a barbershop quartet were on hand at the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother to help mark the milestone.
Sister Sylvia Egan worked as a nurse with Sister Urban.
“She was a very patient woman. but just because of her language – the German – she always came across as very authoritative,” Sister Egan remembers. “She knew what she was going to do and she went ahead and she did it.”
After retiring from her career as a nurse, Sister Urban moved to Denville, New Jersey, where she became a popular public figure, known for her hard work.
Maggie Luckerath knew Sister Urban during her time in New Jersey.
“Sister Mary was known as the Flying Nun of Denville. actually of all of New Jersey,” Luckerath said, “because she was just all over the place – she had so much energy.”
The energy she was known for may just be what has helped Sister Urban make it to 105-years-old.
“When I was younger and I would visit in New Jersey, she would get up early in the morning and she would do a treadmill and a bicycle,” Sister Egan said. “And I thought she was old. So maybe that’s a lesson for all of us.”
