Ledgers pull away to win seventh state title

MADISON, Wis. - Iola-Scandinavia jumped out to an early lead, but Saint Mary's Springs dominated in the second half on their way to another state title.

For the Thunderbirds it was their first trip to Madison in a decade, but looked comfortable on the field at Camp Randall from the beginning. A pair of Bryce Huettner touchdown runs helped Iola-Scandinavia jump out to an early 12-7 lead over the Ledgers.

From there Saint Mary's Springs took over. Receiver Cade Christensen had a big day against the Thunderbirds, catching a pair of touchdowns in the first half to help Springs take a 14-12 lead into the break.

The Ledgers started to pull away in the second half. First, thanks to touchdown runs by senior running back Clay Schueffner and quarterback Mitchell Waechter. Then the Ledgers signal caller got a touchdown reception when Christensen capped off the afternoon with a 38-yard strike to the junior quarterback to make it 35-12.

By winning their seventh state championship Saint Mary's Springs joins Edgar, Lancaster and Stratford for the most in WIAA history.
