Catholic Memorial stunned West De Pere 37-24 in the Division 3 state title game, scoring 37 unanswered points to take home the gold ball.
West De Pere could not have asked for a better start. The Phantoms led Catholic Memorial 17-0 heading into the half, with quarterback Josh Blount and running back Cody Cavil both scoring touchdowns.
Then, on the first play from scrimmage in the second half, defensive back Ben Pawlek intercepted a pass and returned it all the way down to the Catholic Memorial 9-yard line. A few plays later, Cavil punched in another touchdown and West De Pere had the 24-0 lead.
From there, the Crusaders took over, scoring on their next four drives and West De Pere couldn’t hold on.
“I wish I could explain it,” West De Pere coach Jack Batten said. “We kinda ran into a buzzsaw. We couldn’t get stops on defense, plays that had been working in the first half against a similar defense weren’t working in the second half. We were trying to find things offensively that we could move the football and we just weren’t able to come up with the answers.”
