After years of the regular season champion hosting the conference tournament, the Horizon League announced a deal hold the annual event in Detroit for the next five years.

On Thursday the Horizon League’s executive council approved the five year deal with Olympia Entertainment to hold the men’s basketball team in the city starting in 2016. For the first two years of the agreement the tournament will be held at Joe Lewis Arena, the home of the Detroit Red Wings. Then they will move to the new Detroit Events Center, which is currently under construction.

“The partnership with Olympia Entertainment is a unique and exciting opportunity. We want to provide a great tournament experience for all our key constituents, student athletes, coaches, administrators, and fans, and we are excited to work with Olympia and our institutions on that goal,” said Commissioner Jon LeCrone.

The conference championship game will still be held on March 8th of next year, and the rest of the tournament schedule will be announced at a later time.
