GRAND CHUTE, WI (Courtesy: Wisconsin Timber Rattlers) – The return home from an eleven-game road trip was no help for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers as they dropped a 5-2 decision to the Beloit Snappers at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Friday night. The Snappers scored five times in the top of the fifth inning and the Wisconsin offense couldn’t recover. The loss was the sixth straight for the Rattlers.
Wisconsin (23-29) had a great chance to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Monte Harrison singled to start the frame. He stole second and third with one out, but was left stranded.
The Snappers (28-26) made the Rattlers regret not being able to cash in that chance as they broke open the scoreless game with a big top of the fifth inning.
Collin Theroux led off the Beloit’s big inning with a home run to left off Wisconsin starter Jordan Desguin. The blast was his ninth of the season. Eric Marinez followed with a triple. Desguin got the first out of the inning, but would give up an RBI single to Luke Persico. A walk to Nate Mondou brought Miguel Mercedes to the plate and the Snappers first baseman lined a three-run homer to left for a 5-0 lead. The home run was the eleventh of the season for Mercedes, who match Jaylin Davis of Cedar Rapids for the Midwest League lead in homers with the blast.
Wisconsin clawed back into the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Joantgel Segovia, who had singled earlier in the game to move his hitting streak to eight games, doubled to lead-off the inning. Segovia has had at least two hits in each of his last six games. A fielder’s choice on a grounder to third off the bat of Mario Feliciano put runners at the corners. Jose Cuas cashed in Segovia with a double off the wall in center. Then, Ryan Aguilar drove in Feliciano with a sacrifice fly and the Rattlers were within three runs.
But, that was as close as the Rattlers would get. Beloit reliever Seth Martinez, who picked up the win with his four innings, only allowed a one-out single in the eighth over his final two frames. Sam Sheehan tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the Rattlers.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday night. Cameron Roegner (4-1, 5.63) is set to start for the Timber Rattlers. Brandon Bailey (1-1, 2.31) has been named as the starter for the Snappers. Game time is 7:05pm.
