Green Bay’s four month search for a new athletic director is over after the university announced Charles Guthrie was hired to take over at the helm.
Back in May Green Bay lost athletic director Mary Ellen Gillespie to Hartford. Guthrie will be tasked with taking over an athletic department with 16 teams and 250 student athletes. The two most prominent programs being the men’s and women’s basketball teams.
Guthrie comes to Green Bay from San Francisco State, where he was the athletic director for the past three years.
“We are delighted to welcome Charles Guthrie to the UW-Green Bay community as Athletic Director,” said Chancellor Gary LMiller in a press release. “Charles brings exactly the right expertise in NCAA athletics to move an already fantastic program to even higher levels. We were especially impressed with his strong community spirit, ability to work with coaches and staff, understanding of today’s complex NCAA environment, track record with compliance and his overall love of higher education, sports and student athletes.”
Congratulations for Guthrie poured in from all over on Tuesday. Including from Green Bay’s biggest sports franchise, the Packers.
“I’m really excited for Charles. He and I worked together at Colgate over twenty years ago and I have followed his career closely since then. What he has accomplished during his career is truly remarkable. UWGB is getting an extremely talented, experienced athletic director who will have an immediate positive impact on the University. The future of UWGB’s athletics program will be very bright under his leadership,” said Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy.
