Green Bay women’s basketball enters AP Poll at No. 24

GREEN BAY, Wis. –

It’s business as usual for the Green Bay women. Ranked second in the nation in scoring defense, the Phoenix are also seeing their offense come alive.
“You know as long as you have that to fall back on, we’ll be okay, but it is good we’re putting points on the board because in the past we’ve struggled, but I think you see confident players out there on the court and it helps when you have your teammate’s full trust,” Phoenix forward Mehryn Kraker said.
Riding a 9-game winning streak that was punctuated with a blowout win over UW-Milwaukee, the Phoenix have now entered the AP Poll at No. 24.
“It’s really cool, it is,” Phoenix guard Jessica Lindstrom said. “It’s an honor, it’s an awesome accomplishment. It’s not the most important thing, I think we can all agree on that, I think going far in the NCAA tournament is the most important thing at the end of the season.”
The Green Bay women aren’t thinking too much about being ranked 24th in the country, because in the past two years, they’ve lost games immediately following being ranked.
“It’s one of those things that we try not to focus on because everytime you look at history, everytime we’ve been ranked, something terrible has happened that week, so we try not to focus on it,” Kraker said. “It’s kind of one of those prove them right or prove them wrong.”
“Last year we said that too and then something happens and then we’re not ranked anymore, so no there isn’t, so hopefully we’re just taking the accomplishment and running with it,” Lindstrom said.
While they’ll take that national ranking, it’s about much more for Kevin Borseth.
“You wonder how Connecticut being the number on team in the country for so many years, how they deal with that pressure, there’s a pressure there that we feel,” Borseth said. “We’ve been successful in our conference year after year, so we do feel that, but at the end of the day, you have to go out and your effort has to be really the best that it can be to kind of put yourself in a position to be successful, so that’s what we’re really working on right now.”
