Packers Address Defense And Pick Up QB In Later Rounds

This offseason the Packers have seen the majority of their personnel changes on the defensive side of the ball. Early on it was the departures of some familiar faces in the locker room. Then in the draft the team added some new names to the defensive depth chart.

In the first two days of the draft the Packers addressed their needs in the secondary by adding Arizona State safety Damarious Randall, and then picking up Miami-Ohio cornerback Quinten Rollins.

One hole that remained heading into the final rounds of the draft would be at linebacker. A need the Packers wasted little time filling on Saturday when they selected Michigan linebacker Jake Ryan.

The 6’2″ 240 pound linebacker spent much of his early college career on the outside, but made the switch to inside linebacker in his final season at Michigan. Following the move Ryan racked up 112 tackles as a senior, 14 of which were tackles for loss.

It wouldn’t take long for the Packers to make some noise on the offensive side of the ball in the next round.

In a year that could be considered quiet when it came to trades in the draft, the Packers moved up in the fifth round to pick quarterback Brett Hundley.

The all-time leader in total yards and touchdowns at UCLA came back for his redshirt junior season with the Bruins. Instead of going in the early rounds in 2015, the preseason Heisman Trophy candidate continued to slide until the Packers made the move.

The trade also took away the Packers pick in the seventh round, leaving Green Bay with three picks in the sixth round to close out the draft.

In a span of seven picks the Packers selected Oklahoma fullback Aaron Ripkowski, Louisiana-Lafeyette defensive end Christian Ringo, and UAB tight end Kennard Backman.
