The Packers opened up training camp with an 8:15 A.M. practice Thursday.
Injury Report: CB Demetri Goodson (knee) and OLB Vince Biegel (foot) will begin camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) List. Head Coach Mike McCarthy says the former Badgers linebacker and 2017 4th round pick may be out a few weeks, but did not give a timeline on Goodson.
News & Notes: The Packers first training camp practice in helmets and shorts ended at 10:30 A.M. and lasted 2 hours, 15 minutes.
RB Ty Montgomery lost a fumble during a team gauntlet drill, and also fumbled on a toss play during team reps. It was a sloppy day in general for ball-handling as the team shifts focus more toward the running game.
Davon House and LaDarius Gunter were the starting outside cornerbacks, with Damarious Randall and Quinetin Rollins taking reps on the inside with the 1st team. Rookie CB Kevin King was with the second unit, as he works his way back after missing much of the offseason training program to finish classes at the University of Washington.
Safeties Morgan Burnett and rookie Josh Jones were both used at inside linebacker often during team drills.
The play of the day came when Aaron Rodgers threw a perfect deep ball to Davante Adams who blew past Gunter for a 60-yard touchdown.
They said it: Mike Daniels took an NFL Network microphone and asked Martellus Bennett (who was wearing a cheesehead during a media interview session) if he was happy to finally put on a cheesehead.
Martellus Bennett: “Yes. I usually like the metaphorical cheese that goes in my pocket, but the cheese that goes on my head works as well.”
Aaron Rodgers on the first day of training camp: “This is a fun part of the year where there’s a lot of unknowns. How the team is going to come together, how you’re going to start gelling on offense, defense and special teams. Personalities are coming out and team chemistry. It’s an exciting time of the year.”
Jordy Nelson on is starting over again after a deep playoff run last season: “I don’t think you feel that right now. When I feel that is like when we lost like at Atlanta when you end the season. Because then you realize all you have to go through to get back to that opportunity, and that’s when it’s really daunting on you. But right now as cliche as it is, you’re really just focused one day at a time because if you look at the big picture, it’s going to be a long month. Training camp is going to be a grind.”
Mike Daniels on Packers not being complacent after 8 straight playoff berths: “We came back from what 4-6 to being in the NFC Championship game? So when you have that type of confidence and that type of expectations, the sense of urgency is different when you come to OTA’s, camp, practice every day. We’re in the playoffs every year, NFC Championship game twice out of the last 3 years. Young guys see that, they already know we’re not rebuilding. We’re coming here and coming for blood and that’s just what it’s about. We’re coming to win.”
